Bleszinski On Gears 2 Online Launch: It Made Me “Cringe”

by Ernice Gilbert on November 18th, 2010, under Epic Games, Hot, Microsoft, News

The Gears of War franchise has become the third most popular on Microsoft’s Xbox 360, topped only by the popular Halo and Call of Duty franchises. Many contend Epic Games has helped in making the TPS genre what it is today, and adding innovation to online multiplayer with its popular Horde Mode, a feature that many developers copycat.

The lead designer is proud of his game, though, and in an interview EGM (the latest issue), he shared what lead to Gears of War being so amazingly successful.

He was, however, extremely disappointed in the way the second installment, Gear of War 2, online component unfolded, saying it made him “cringe”.

“I look back at the online launch of Gears 2 and cringe,” Bleszinski admitted. “You’d go to play online, and end up waiting forever for a match.”

“I think it’s one of the reasons people played so much Horde,” he added, “in part because it was new, but also because playing online was, at first, so frustrating.”

That’s all in the past now, as Bleszinski assures Gears 3 will be hosted with dedicated servers, saying “good riddance” to the annoyances of Gears 2′s problems for good.

yeah I remember waiting for over an hour when it first came out. My friends and I where active members on their forums, even though they kept deleting our profiles. They were very touchy about videos showing glitches and problems when the game when it first came out, and we kept posting them, asking for them to be fixed, but they just kept deleting out profiles. But, what I was saying before I went off on that tangent is that we have begged for 2 years for dedicated servers, and they have finally listened and delivered, and I super excited now.

so why not delay it and fix it?
that is the worst thing about todays consoles being online enabled, besides every single game getting gimped for MP, developers just say fudge it if enough people complain will just patch the bugs later.
im sick of buying games than having to wait weeks to be able to actually play them properly!
cough COD BO, cough fallout new vegas.

Yeah, but give them credit for at least trying to fix the bugs.

Hey, you never know what you’ll encounter once such massive games are released.

but you should not run into anything, you should be going through your code with a fine tooth comb before you release it.
if you release a game thats buggy than you did not go through your game properly!
thats what the debugger is for!
the video game industry is so lazy and really forgiving.
if a game has a bug, meh who cares.
but if the same person wrote a program that did the pay for the reserve bank and there was a bug in it how long do you think he will be keeping his job for?
he would be lucky not to find himself in jail!
in the video game industry if your program falls apart, meh who cares, but in every other industry that uses programs you would be fired so fast your head would spin!
for example my TAFE teachers daughter works for one of the big TAX collectors here, her job was to write a program for them which would read a file check if there is anyone with outstanding finance than calculate how much they owed and send them a email about it.
in her program she declared the total as a int instead of a float so instead of them being charged cant remember what it was but lets say it was 550.20, instead of charging them 550.60 since it was a integer and integers do not support decimal points they were charged 550.00.
so the company paid the 550, there still was the 20 cents that were not paid, overtime that grew to several hundred than the company receives the overdue bill for several hundred bucks, they go back and say hey what gives we paid the full amount!
than the boss says no you did not, you underpaid 20 cents, they say thats not what we were told and show the email the program created.
    guess what happened?
the lady who wrote the program, she had to pay the several hundred owed AND she got fired.
that would never happen in the video game industry, they would say eh who cares shit happens.
in the real life, you would be fired so fast your head would spin!
simple fact is you are getting paid to do a task, if you dont do it properly than of course the customer and your boss is going to be fuming!
