Bulletstorm was at the Tokyo Game Show this past September turning all kinds of Japanese heads its way. The game’s a first person shooter developed by People Can Fly with much guidance from Epic Games. But why bring a shooter to Japan when it’s a known fact that said genre isn’t popular with gamers in the east? It’s because, according to Bulletstorm executive producer Mark Morris, there’s this “over-the-topness” in the game that’s much like many Japanese titles.
For him, Bulletstorm will “do well in Japan”.
“You look at Bulletstorm, you look at the skill shot gameplay, there’s an arcade element to that, and you often see that in Japanese games: Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, and then obviously there’s the over-the-topness of the game,” he told Gamereactor in an interview.
“First person shooters are not as popular in Japan as they are in western countries, but I think you’re starting to see that change, and of course I’d love it if Bulletstorm helped change that slight cultural divide.”
He later added: “I think Bulletstrom’s going to do well in Japan — I certainly hope so.”
later, Morris spoke on the different ways you can take on a situation in the game, for example a difficult enemy. You could destroy his ammo by shooting at this gun, shoot him directly, sneak in behind, drag him your way and send him sailing forward with a kick, or you could just blow his head off.
All these and many more similar options give the game “immense” replay value, he says.
Bulletstorm comes out on February 22nd in the U.S., and on the 24th of the same month in Europe. The former’s the same date as Killzone 3, so we’ll see how it all works out. Not a good strategy I don’t think.
