That’s an angry man. A very angry man.
Reviews of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow’s been going live for a few days now, and in the beginning most were great. Almost all were giving the game 9/10, but then came yesterday….
IGN gave Castlevania: Lords of Shadow a 7.5/10 with the reviewer calling Mercury Steam’s effort a God of War clone.
Here’s his opening quote:
“When you think of Castlevania, there’s probably a bunch of things that come to mind, the Belmont family fighting Dracula, 2D platforming, whips — or maybe even Metroidvania. There’s a lot that defines the franchise but you won’t find hardly any of that in Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. Playing this reboot feels much more like playing God of War.”
Well, David Cox, the game’s producer is pissed to hell with IGN’s take on his game, believing the reviewer didn’t play the game, and asking gamers to disregard it.
“I got no problem with low reviews. A review is after all someones opinion but that is not a review of our game from IGN,” he said via twitter.
“I would look at all the reviews good and bad and read the actual content of what they all had to say. Disregard the IGN one…”
“I don’t have a problem with Gamespot. The reviewer, at least played the game.”
Yes, you’re reading all this correctly. The man went on and on about IGN’s review.
Get the full scope on his twitter page.
He had no problems with Gamespot’s review, though, saying:
“For the record. I have no problem with the Gamespot review. So please don’t twist my words.”
Gamespot also game the game a 7.5/10.

It’s out of control, folks.
I have seen a lot of 8′s for this game, and some 9′s. I am not sure about any of the reviews for this game because I mostly trust Game Informer and G4TV when it comes to reviews. We’ll if you read the G4TV review they gave it a 4 out of 5, but when you actually read the full review it seemed like they wanted to give it a lower score, but couldn’t. I mean they really had a lot of problems with it, but it still got a high score. So I am not sure about the reviews for this game so far.
Yeah, they’re all over the place. Yet, I don’t think Cox should be acting the way he is. I’ll rent first.
me too. I was not planning on buying it anyway, but really want now.
Yeah, I’m still sure it’s a good game..
obviously he did not read IGNs review because he did say its a great action game, just not a Castlevania game.
hes just disappointed they removed allot of things the series is known for, which is understandable.
how would you feel if sony SA did another GOW but it had no kratos, no greek mythology and stared a robot learning how to fly?
Lol, nick, that would suck!
I downloaded the demo the other day from EU PSN. I’ll try it out this weekend to see if it’s worth a purchase.
@Nick: LOL, yeah that’d be really bad haha
@Mostly: Yeah, haven’t gotten around to play it myself, I’ll do the same and see what’s up. But Cox needs to calm down.
Yeah, he does need to calm down. The reviewer is just stating his opinion anyways. On the other hand, if the reviewer didn’t play the entire game (as implied by the dev) before offering his opinion then the dev has a just cause for complaint. Happens all the time though. Guess we’ll never know for sure.
I read an article once that claimed most reviewers don’t play a game in full before reviewing it because there’s just not enough time…..I’m not sure I’d agree with that but that’s what one of the reviewer’s said.
In the case of Lords of Shadow, I can see why Cox got upset: the IGN reviewer said there was no castle in the game, when, clearly, there was at the end….
Good points.
cox is taking this far too personally, the review from IGN was upset because its so different from normal Castlevania games.
he sounds like a massive fan of the series and wanted more of the same.
like me, if insomniac released a new R&C game and changed it the way cox has Castlevania i would flip!
hes not saying its a bad game, hes saying its not a Castlevania game which is so true!
Indeed. He needs to relax, man.
It’s not a bad game at all. He did blast it, though. Calling it a God of War rip off and what not. Even that he wouldn’t recommend it to Castlevania fans — that’s harsh
no, hes saying he would not recommend it to castlevania fans simply because he feels its not a castlevania game.
thats all, you can tell he likes the game and thinks its a great game, hes just disappointed that its not like the others.
i was the same with DMC4, i thought it was a fantastic game but i was really disappointed, i wished it was more like DMC3.
same as red faction guerrilla i thought it was a fantastic game, one of last years finest in fact!
but i was still disappointed that it was not more like the previous titles.
RFG is the best example, its a great game but it does not feel like a game in its series.
which is the exact same feeling im getting for this.
still cant wait for it, anything thats a action game and has puzzles im ready for!
and i really liked the ancient fairytale feel of the story the demo really made me feel like i was back in those days not in 2010 playing a game from back then, i really cant say that about any other game, for once a game actually really made me feel like i was back in the games times.
