PS3 Firmware 3.50 Kills Some Third Party USB Devices And Fake Controllers

PS3 firmware update 3.50 not only added many great features like full 3D compatibility for Blu-Ray movies to the console, it also bricked some third-party devices.

This according to an update over at the official PlayStation boards, which confirms that firmware 3.50 has disabled “75% of 3rd-party USB Adapters.” Also, this may impact some third-party controllers.

Here’s the explanations:

Counterfeit PlayStation®3 Wireless Controllers, which are practically identical in appearance to genuine PlayStation®3 Wireless Controllers, have been discovered in the market. SCEA advises consumers to be cautious when buying PlayStation®3 Wireless Controllers from uncertain sources as the quality, reliability and safety of counterfeit products is uncertain, and in some cases, may be dangerous. It is possible that some counterfeit product may ignite or explode, resulting in injury or damage to the user, your PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, or other property. Moreover, SCEA does not support continued functionality of counterfeit or unlicensed controllers in system software updates and these devices may cease to function in the future because of system software updates.”

Simply put, the controller won’t work when connected through USB if it isn’t licensed by Sony. Most controllers will work fine, however.

Our advice: try you best to use only Sony accessories, with your second option being Sony licensed accessories. You can lose a lot of data with the counterfeits like I’m sure many did.

sony love pissing off their fans dont they?
this is exactly why i hate sony lately, the way they treat their fans is pathetic!
you were human, and spent x bucks less on a third party controller, so since you did not give your money to us were stopping that from working.
like the 1000 i paid for my 60GB and the 500 i paid for my 120GB and the 400 i paid on 4 DS3 controllers, and the 200 i paid on 2 six axis controllers, and the 100 i paid for the move kit, and the 70 i paid for a extra move controller, and the 120 bucks ive paid for every one of their games.
    thats not enough?
funny way of saying thank you for buying our products!
