Xbox Live Is A “Train Wreck” Utters Gabe Newell

by Ernice Gilbert on September 9th, 2010, under Hot, News, Valve

Oh boy, the times have changed haven’t day? Gabe Newell uttering such blasphemy at Microsoft online service? Please, somebody, wake me up.

But it’s exactly what the Valve boss said in a recent interview with PC Gamer when asked if his company’s mistake on Xbox Live was to assume Microsoft would let Valve update its games more often.

His response past the break.

“We thought that there would be something that would emerge,” Newell said, “because we figured it was a sort of untenable… Oh yeah, we understand that these are the rules now, but it’s such a train wreck that something will have to change.”

“That’s why we’re really happy with the current situation with the PS3,” he said. “We’re solving it now in a way that is going to work for our customers, rather than assuming something is going to emerge later that will allow us to fix this.”

Microsoft’s online approach is notoriously closed compared to Sony’s PSN. Xbox Live allows one free title update, while PSN allows for much more.

We’ll see if Microsoft change this in the future.

I though this was coming. I didn’t know that developers have to pay so much to just release updates and dlc on xbox live. It is kind of ridiculous. I am disliking MS more and more every day.

hes right though, M$ only allow one free update per game with some exceptions.
that is why allot of L4D and team fortress DLC has not been released on XBLA, and why allot of free content on the PC is paid on XBLA.
M$ have really shot them with it, its a customers paradise, but a developers nightmare!!!!!
tis why valve are in love with the PS3 at the moment.

I just want to know where all this money goes. We pay more for xbox live, developers pay to put things on xbox live and they are making money off of each console. Where are the first party developers or games? Where is the money going?

In their fat pockets? I’m not sure. I’m simply not sure where MS is investing all the cash it makes
