NPD Hardware Sales Results For August 2010 – Xbox 360 Dominates Again

Say what you will about Microsoft, but if there’s one thing the giant knows how to do is sell consoles. And this month, once more, the Xbox 360 outsold everything; yes, even the ubiquitous Wii.

Give credit where credit is due.

Although this month represented the lowest in new physical retail sales of hardware, content and accessories sales since August 2006, Microsoft’s console managed to stand tall.

According to the NPD’s Anita Frazier, “the 360 platform contributed more than 1/3 of total new physical retail sales across hardware, software and accessories while the PS3 platform contributed over 1/4 of total dollar sales.”

PlayStation 3 – 226.0K

PSP – 79.4K

Xbox 360 – 356.7K

Wii – 244.3K

Nintendo DS – 342.7K

As you can see, the Xbox 360 was the best selling console for the month of August in the US, followed by the DS, Wii and then PS3.

    I expected this with the release of the redesigned model. The same thing happened with ps3. There are a lot of people who just upgraded from their older models. I know xbox has sold a lot, but I wonder how many of those where because of the red ring failure. I personally have bought 3 of them because of red ring, and in all I have had 7 different xbox. I also expected this because it is only the US sales. If it was worldwide, it would be a different story. Playstation has been dominating xbox worldwide. Didn’t xbox, at one point, have an 8 million console lead over ps3 and now it is down to 3 or 3.5 million. Sony has really been making up ground on MS.

    how is that possible!
    i mean honestly the 360 has not had any exclusives release last month, and had barely any decent games release for it so how can it be selling so well!?
    looks like live is a stronger sales incentive than one would think, tis the only explanation i can think of.

    That and the new slim – plus Halo: Reach incoming

    I think it is Halo: Reach mostly, and people upgrading to the newer console.

    Yeah, I know. Also, my friends that I play with on xbox have bought at least 4 or 5 different xbox consoles. So, to me, MS numbers are misleading. I would like to know how many consoles have failed and how many have been purchased and then subtract them from each other. I think it would reveal an interesting number.

    Indeed, I’d like to see that number too. But to add to your point, the Madden sales number in the US were almost identical between the PS3 and Xbox 360, which makes me think hard about Microsoft’s presumed install base in the US being millions more than the PS3’s.

    Because if that’s the case, why isn’t more Madden games selling?

    more madden games are not selling because as i said the other day 99% of 360 gamers only like shooters.
    tis why shooters on said console sell so well, where other games not so much
