Current Consoles “Already At Their Technical Peak” Says Crytek

Even as Sony keeps bragging about the offerings of the PS3, and how there’s still juice to be sucked out of the platform, Crytek’s CEO Cevat Yerli believes there isn’t much more designers can do with either it or the Xbox 360.

He uttered the blasphemy while speaking to GamesTM as part of a roundtable discussion (as cited by NowGamer via PSXextreme), according to the boss, developers are already “pushing the boundaries,” and if gamers want next level stuff, they’d simply have to wait until the eighth generation of gaming rolls in.

“I think that there is not much more possible on the 360 and PS3 at this stage,” he said. “We’re already using a lot of squeezing tricks and smoke and mirrors to get the maximum we can out of the hardware. We’re pushing the boundaries already. With CryEngine 3 I think going forward we’re going to require a new generation of console hardware.”

The man’s got a point, but even when we look back the the PS2, we realize that even in its closing days, the boundaries were still being pushed; so I reckon there’s yet life in this generation. Remember how God of War II looked on the PS2? Yes.

However, Yerli’s got a point.

Developers say this all the time, but I rarely take them seriously; especially Crytek. I am not saying that they are not trust worthy, just that they work mostly with pc and have not spent as much time with the consoles. To truly say this you need to have worked with the console for years and made a few games. Also you need to build an engine that is specific for the consoles. Crytek’s engine is built mostly for pc’s. So, if you make this statement then you need to really have used the console. If this statement came from Naughty Dog and they were talking about the ps3 I would believe it. They have spent a lot of time building their engine specifically for the ps3 and have made a couple of games that look better than the last, and I am sure Uncharted 3 will look better than Uncharted 2. So, spend more time with the console and build a console specific engine before you say that they are tapped out.

I couldn’t agree more. It’s like they say that sometimes to hide their incapability to handle the thing. Not saying that’s Crytek’s attitude, but you get that a lot these days…

Exactly, and truthfully from what I have seen of Crysis 2 it does not look as good as Killzone 3. KZ3 is looking amazing. If you have not spent the time with the system and learned how to truly enhance your engine to get the most out it, then do not say anything.

    Yep, just shut up.

Just to let you know that if I sound a little angry when I speak about Crytek it is not because I hate them, I am excited about Crysis 2, but I am just tired of their arrogance. They are saying we have the best looking game on consoles, but to me Uncharted 2 looks as good and KZ3 looks amazing and I am sure Uncharted 3 will look better.

True, Crysis 2 hasn’t been able to justify their lofty boast. To me, Killzone 3 and Uncharted kills Crysis, for now…. So unless they can show otherwise, I’ll just brush their big talk aside

yeah, but I am sure the pc version will blow anything on the consoles away. lol.

that is a complete load of utter tripe!
developers are constantly building new tools, tweaking engines, finding new ways to make their programs more efficient.
like the lighting system in alan wake, it allows you to have even more lighting effects than freaking KZ2 at half the processor time!
or the new tech team bondi are working on for LA Noire, that gives you animations which make GOW3 look plasticity and fake!
there is much, much more that can be squeezed out of consoles, you watch KZ3 will release and set a new bar, than crysis 2 will release and set a new bar, than Agent will release and set a new bar.
this is not going to stop, just like the ps1 and ps2 were going to get more and more technologically advanced games and thats not going to stop until next gen is upon us.
and even then it will take a while to stop!
look at GOW2, it was a freaking ps2 game but it looked better than some ps3 games!

Oh yes RedBull, the PC version of Crysis 2 will put the consoles version to shame.

  11. nick September 2, 2010 at 9:08 am -

the PC version will certainly blow everything out of the water!
i just hope its a little more polished than mafia 2!
never in my entire life have i had so many issues playing a PC game!
that thing has more freaking bugs than fallout 3!

    Shame on 2K

Yeah I totally agree with you guys! Games will just continue to get better. Developers that think otherwise are either lazy, full of BS or both.

    Both ; )

  15. nick September 3, 2010 at 9:28 am -
