So, many a gamer would argue that the most important aspect of owning any gaming console is not the price, not how good it looks, obviously. It’s not how powerful the thing is either, but rather the amount of games that can be played only on the platform.
Is that so? I mean, are exclusives so important? It’s time to talk, do it here:
The Official GamesThirst talk lounge.
Right now, Sony’s ruling the day in the exclusive games department, yet the Xbox 360 still holds a decent lead in install base over the PS3.
If exclusives had such a great impact, and since Sony’s been leading the way for so long, wouldn’t the PS3′s install base be bigger than the 360′s?
There are other factors at play I’m sure.
Let’s talk.

I believe that exclusives are extremely important to a gaming console. They show what developers can truly do with a console. They do not have to focus on writing code for 2 different consoles and can focus on maximizing their game engine for the one console. In fact, the only reason I bought my ps3 in the first place was for the exclusives. Also, in the beginning, I bought my xbox 360 first because it had the more appealing exclusives, but now the ps3 does and I play it a lot more. So, I believe exclusives are important to a console.
Let me see someone beat what RedBullGT33 just said. I think you’ve just hit the nail directly on its head with that response.
exclusives are the most important thing for a system for 2 reasons.
1 it gives developers a chance to show off, show the world how skillful they are,id be really hard and expensive to create a game pushing the limits of both the 360 and ps3 thus why most exclusives make multiplatform games look like last gen games.
2 exclusives are what people buy a system for especially with the ps3 since 90% of the time the 360 version of a game is superior to the ps3 version.
not to mention the 360 controller is far more comfortable and XBLA is by far the better service.
exclusives is what defines a system, thats why the ps2 absolutely wiped the floor with the xbox and gamecube, and its why the ps3 will wipe the floor with the 360 and wii!
Good points. Exclusives are the most important thing for a system, but price is also very crucial. You must remember that it was only when Sony released the slim PS3 that it started catching up in sales with the 360… Not when MGS was released, not Killzone 2 or all the other exclusives, it was when the price dropped
Well as my name suggests I mainly play exclusives mostly, lol, and that’s why I game on the PS3. I mean their exclusives are pretty much unmatched in quality. Think Uncharted 2, GOW3, LBP (yes this too) just to name a few. I agree with Ernice that the price plays a huge roll as well though. Marketing is another big one. Microsoft does this better than Sony, though as of late Sony’s been doing pretty good. Those are the trifecta of a consoles success IMO.
And I agree fully, ExclusivesMostly. Sony’s really a force to be reckoned with in the gaming industry.
Microsoft is, too. And because of that fact, we have a better Sony and even Nintendo today.
Competition breeds innovation.
price is really irrelevant if you have the content to back it up.
as the saying goes you get what you pay for.
Yeah, but sometimes your money just won’t stretch that long
Lol @ Ernice. That’s a great way to put it.
Just for clarification: I am agreeing with Ernice’s comment.
I think it’s only reasonable. I mean yes, a console might have great exclusives, but if it costs $600 and the other, although not many exclusives like the former, but costs $299, most gamers will go for the cheaper deal.
Especially when you don’t have much cash and you’re looking for a good gaming fix.
Now, though, Sony’s doing extremely well.
yea, but price does not make you want to buy something does it?
if you want something no matter how much it is you will find a way to buy it, unless obviously its really expensive like 100K expensive.
but talking hundreds, price really is irrelevant because price does not make you want something content does.
when i bought my ps3, it was a thousand bucks that was allot of cash but it did not deter me in the slightest!
if you have the content to back it up, you can charge more or less whatever you want!
look at the Iphone 4, is it really worth 800 bucks?
MORE THAN A PS3!!!!!!!
no, of course its not BUT they can charge that price because they know no other phone has the support they do.
look at the blackberry, or the HTC phones.
there better than the Iphone, they have more features BUT look at the apps they have, the developer support.
thats why people love the Iphone, they could have the superior & cheaper HTC or blackberry but choose not to because of the content the Iphone supports.
its also like Nvidia, ATI cards are cheaper, run cooler and are just as fast.
so whos cards sell better?
Nvidias!
why?
because they have the developer support!
very few developers support open GL, but theres heaps of developers who support CUDA.
price, quality, all these things are irrelevant if you have the content to back it up!
obviously they help, more can not hurt only help.
BUT content will always dictate a purchase, after all people dont buy things to be cheap, to be better, they buy them so they can use them!
“if you want something no matter how much it is you will find a way to buy it, unless obviously its really expensive like 100K expensive.”
There are two problems with your comment:
First, gamers just want to game, whether they’re in love with Sony or not, they will, most time, go for the cheaper console.
You also made reference to really expensive being 100K. Dude, sometimes, $500 is much. What’s not expensive for one might cost too much for someone else
well now it may be too expensive, but if theres enough content for it than that will make you want to save up and get it.
id much rather spend 1K and have hundreds things to use with it, than spend 5 bucks and have 5 things to do wit it.
