Xbox 360 Slim: It Only Does….Everything?

It only does everything. Sure, it’s the PS3’s slogan of course, talking up how said system is ubiquitous in all its ways. However, we decided to take a look at Microsoft’s latest Xbox 360 Slim, debuted at E3 2010, and its capabilities. When we peeped hard and close we quickly realized that there was more than meets the eye; because apart from playing Blu-ray, there’s nothing much the PS3 can do that the Xbox 360 can’t. Seriously.

Come with us, take out the fanboy glasses for a second, and let’s deal with reality because come to think of it, there are actually more services on Xbox Live than on PSN; and most of what PSN offers today were available first on Xbox Live. Likewise, PS3 has more exclusives than Xbox 360, and some of the titles Microsoft has developed were direct assaults to counteract Sony big name games. Just look at Forza. It’s not fanboy talk, these are facts and we can’t hide from them. Listen for a sec, the Xbox 360 has been out since 2005 and yet it’s going head to head with PS3 in almost every department. Year-in-year-out the story remains unchanged, the more Sony push, the harder Microsoft comes back and the harder Microsoft assault, the stronger Sony becomes.

It’s a classic game of of ‘I can do what you do’ and believe it or not, it’s never going to stop.

Comparison #1 – Xbox Live vs PSN

Xbox Live:

-Voice Cross Game Chat
-Avatars
-Downloadable Content
-Multiplayer Gaming
-Parties
-Netflix Movie Streaming
-Sky Player
-Game Room
-Xbox Live Arcade
-Facebook
-Twitter
Last.fm
Zune
Xbox Live – Gold

PSN:

-Video Download Service
-Qore/OPMHD
-PSone Classics
-Playstation Home
-Netflix
-Facebook
-What’s New
-Trophies
-Portrable IDs
-Life With Playstation
-Home
-PlayStation Plus
-3D

From what’s listed above, there are obviously more services on Xbox Live that PSN, however with the newly launched PlaySation Plus service Sony’s unveiled, the sky’s the limit. Expect more from the giant in the near future.

Comparison #2: 2010 Console Exclusive Titles:

Alan Wake
Crackdown 2
Fable III
Splinter Cell: Conviction
Mass Effect 2
Halo: Reach
XCOM
Kingdoms
Gears of War 3

PS3:

God of War III
Gran Turismo 5
White Knight Chronicles 2
Yakuza 4
MAG
Heavy Rain
Resistance 3
The Last Guardian
LittleBigPlanet 2
Agent
Killzone 3
inFamous 2

There’s no doubt in even the most avid Xbox 360 fan’s mind that PS3 have some killer apps already available and coming, and that there’s a definite edge for PS3 in the exclusive department.

Comparison #3: Sales

Worldwide: PS3 – 36 Million

Worldwide: Xbox 360 – 41 Million

The numbers above tell a story of equality. why? Well, although the Xbox 360 is leading PS3 by about 5 million consoles, a lot of that could be credited to the fact it launched a full year before PS3, hence the obvious lead.

Again, this is not for the fanboys to come raging with foul words and disgust; it’s a sincere look at the capabilities of both systems, and if you take off those shades (you know who you are), you’ll come to the realization that doesn’t matter which one you own, you’re in a very good position.

The new 360 finally catches up with the PS3 by including 802.11 b/g/n wifi connectivity. This is probably the single biggest improvement over the former models, which required you to purchase an additional accessory that cost anywhere from $80 and up. The PS3 has had it since launch, and it is about time the 360 caught up.

The new 360 also features five USB ports (two on the front and three on the back) versus three in the old 360, as well as an AUX port specifically for Microsoft’s Kinect motion device. On the back, the connections are the same (HDMI, Ethernet out), with the exception of an upgraded digital audio port that accepts TOSLINK S/PIF optical input standard on all models.

Nice article. “The title”….does grab attention, misleading IMO. A few things missing from the PSN section: (free) online multiplayer gaming, built-in web browser that supports flash (can access lastFM etc directly from it). Oh and in fairness I must point out that you listed PS Home twice.

Hey you should do an article about the PS4/nextXBOX about when they’ll release and possible launch titles. I’ll give you a head start: PS4 will release Fall 2014 with Uncharted 4, Killzone 4, Infamous 3 as launch titles.

Haha, I might bite, ExclusivesMostly; I just might ; )

360 might also have more sales since most people got red ring of death and went out to get a new one.

I think you Missed quite a few PS3 features. Things like:

    Web Browsing
    Free online play
    Photo Uploader
    Youtube video uploader
    Video editor
    Play Create Share
    HDMI 1.3
    3D

You also could have pointed out that 360 doesn’t need a disc for Netflix. A little more examination would have helped your comparison be more accurate.

XBOX 360 DOES EVERYTHING? ha. That’s what Microsoft wants you to think. It looks just like the original PS3 fat. Glossy piano black finish, touch sensitive buttons, built in wifi, but the truth is,
the PS3 can still do way more.

    3D Bluray games
    3D Bluray Movies
    HDMI 1.4 (Sony updated it)

Folding @ Home allows you to solve cancer.
HOME lets you interact within a virtual world.
Photo Gallery allows you to import pictures, view them with style, edit them, then upload them to the internet.

    @WoshJills
    HDMI 1.4 (Sony updated it)

You cannot update a physical port via firmware nor did sony implement HDMI 1.4 into the slim. Dear god!!!

I read trough your article “Xbox 360 Slim: It Only Does….Everything” and it just pisses my off that you can publish a article that will start a flame war basically and the facts are total wrong. If you are going to publish this kind of reviews you can’t choose a side you need to write it from a neutral stand point. The article poorly written, facts are completely wrong and you are trying to show one side of the coin.

    PSN VS XBOX LIVE

You compare them in a poor way and you are just basically listing amount of features that doesn’t show anything. For example trophies and achievements takes out each other and why are only trophies listed. And you are listing Twitter as a feature on X360 when you can access it on the PS3 web-browser. Why are you listing features on both sides and you don’t even mention that PSN is free.

    X360

    + Voice Cross Game Chat
    + Party system
+ Sky Player, Last FM, ESPN

    PS3

    + Free
+ More robust Video Download Service
+ VidZone, BBC Player, Hulu, MLBTV

    CONSOLE EXCLUSIVES

This part got me pissed because it is so in accurate. You list a 3 console/PC exclusives on the Microsoft side but you didn’t add a single one for on the PS3 and if we are only talking of real exclusives you listed only four X360 exclusives. You also missed eleven real exclusives for the PS3 which are already out or are scheduled to launch before the end of 2011. I could also mention a lot of other exclusives like Metal Gear Solid 4, Valkyria Chronicles, Last Rebellion which launched in March 2010 and other exclusives but they are probably not getting a exclusive game from these studious in near future or a piece of shit like Crackdown 2. And I want to ask you what exclusives games will Microsoft have in fall 2011 more than the listed?

    X360

    + Alan Wake
    - Crackdown 2, have you played it? is the first Crackdown for 60$ it feels like 30$ add on.
    + Fable III
    + Forza 4, added it
    - Splinter Cell: Conviction, if you list console/PC exclusives do it on both sides.
    - Mass Effect 2, if you list console/PC exclusives do it on both sides.
+ Halo: Reach, it is the last Halo game from Bungie and 344 Industries can probably not make a
    - XCOM, if you list console/PC exclusives do it on both sides.
+ Kingdoms, we don’t know when it’s coming out but it can also be for PC
+ Gears of War 3, well it is the last Gear of War game and do you believe they will keep doing exclusive games for Microsoft when they can double there cash by doing multi-platform games?

    PS3

+ 3D Dot Game Heroes [MISSED ONE]
    + Ape Escape [MISSED TWO]
    Agent
    + Demon’s Souls [MISSED THREE]
    + DC Universe Online [PC]
    + Final Fantasy XIV [PC]
    + Free Realms [PC]
+ Final Fantasy Versus XIII [MISSED FOUR]
    God of War III
    Gran Turismo 5
    Heavy Rain
    Little Big Planet 2
    Killzone 3
    inFamous 2
    MAG
+ MLB 11: The Show [MISSED FIVE]
    + ModNation Racers [MISSED SIX]
    + MotorStorm: Apocalypse [MISSED SEVEN]
    Resistance 3
    + Singstar [MISSED EIGHT]
    + Socom 4 [MISSED NINE]
    + The Agency [PC]
    The Last Guardian
    + Twisted Metal [MISSED TEN]
    + Uncharted 2 [MISSED ELEVEN]
    White Knight Chronicles 2
    Yakuza 4

    SALES

It isn’t relevant, how much a console have sold can depend on many different things. Price point, how often the console brakes, how many different models a company releases …

    SPECS

Well I just need to say I never have needed to upgrade my PS3 for a bigger hard drive, not for HDMI, not for HD-DVD, not for 3D. I maybe don’t have a 3DTV today but when I bought my PS3 I didn’t have a HDTV either. Xbox still has disc scratching and the new Xbox still feels cheap and doesn’t have Blue-ray or 3D. Also 100 GB blue-ray discs are already readable without extra equipment or modified firmware and it is already possible to make 200 GB disc and the only thing you need is a firmware upgrade on the PS3 to make this possible. The PS3 is a future proof machine and if only Sony should have been a better software company it would be s o much better.

    FINALLY

I recommend you to re write your article from a neutral standpoint, show all facts and give your personal comments in the end. And the pictures needs to be re-sized.

    Greetings

thing that i hate most about M$ is they dont bring us anything.
they released a good year before the ps3, and all they brang was HD gaming with xbox features.
they never innovate, give us something new were always relying on sony to do that.
but, i must mention the 360 can do 3D.
every version of crysis 2 does stereoscopic 3D.
just because we have not seen something does not mean its not possible.

“just because we have not seen something does not mean its not possible,” you can say that again.
