Thirsty Conversations

The moon is shinning, the sun is shinning, rain is falling and snow is coming. Yes, they’re all happening at the same time in different parts of the world, and although we’re not Ubiquitous like God, we all can come here and talk about our favorite pass time:videogames.

What do you think of the gaming industry today? Do you like the route developers are taking with downloadable content? Should the price of games be lowered, and what do you think about used game sales?

Talk about all the aforementioned and whatever else you like. Do it here: The Official GamesThirst Talk Lounge.

    Here’s what I think:

DLC – a nice addition if they actually create extra stuff and not unlock something that’s already on the disk. That’s cheating gamers and some of the games that do it aren’t even worth their initial cost which brings me to my next point.
Cost: in all honesty some games deserve to be priced at $60 like Uncharted 2, Gears 3, God of War 3, etc. But some games (the overwhelming majority) need to be priced at $49.99 and below. I mean I wouldn’t even pay $30 for some of them. Yes I’m aware that developers need to make a profit but there’s a simple solution for that: make a good game!

I agree with you on all fronts man, especially the price of some of these titles… Great insight.

    industry?
    pathetic!
too many great developers and publishers have sold their soul to the devil!
publishers like M$, activision, ubisoft, $E, capcom.
they could not care less if they released a great game, and that their fans are pleased.
all they care about, is filling that back pocket!

    DLC?
i have one question for that.
who said all DLC has to be MP related?
why cant we have a story expansion pack, ala fallout 3?

bloody oath the price of games should be lowered!
when you think about it most games cost 30 – 40 million dollars to make and advertise, the whole kit and caboodle!
so if games cost 60 USD us that as the standard since most copies would be sold in the US.
so if a company sells one million units at 60 bucks a pop they made 60 million dollars of that game!
now that is quite low, most games these days sell allot more than 1M units, RDR for instance.
but anyway, 1 million units at 60 bucks a pop that brings in 60 million buckaroos!
now say the game cost a little higher than normal, say 50 million dollars that still leaves 10 million bucks profit!
that is a crap load of cash if you ask me!!!!!
and thats judging off the cheaper price of games, AND a low sales pace as i said most games sell more than 1M units.
here it gets even worse 110 AUD for every game that leaves a MASSIVE hole in your wallet!
honestly in a busy month, take may for example i spent a good 800 bucks on games that month!
    800 bucks IN ONE MONTH!!!!!!!!!!!!
games should be 50 – 60 AUD MAX!
not this 110 AUD bull crap!
i mean if you buy a game a month than who cares, its only a small amount of cash.
but if your like me, and like to buy as many titles as i can well than your looking at a good 2K easy per year!
thats just games, not to mention accessories and consoles.

used game sales i have no problem with, except trade in prices and i dont think its fair developers dont get a share of it.
this is a tricky ball field though because some would say why should the developer and publisher get a second dip?
well i say to that why should the retailer?
the retailer pays x amount for each game so they make a profit on each new sale they make, than if they sell that game again as used there making another profit on that.
so retail stores get a second dip at the pot, so why should not developers?

what i dont agree with is every time i trade something in i get fudge all for it than EB sells it for 10 times what they paid me!
like my PSP i traded in for my wii, they gave me 50 bucks for it than they resell it for 300.
i traded in crackdown 2 because my 360 scratched the crap out of it, and EB would not give me a refund so i traded it and they gave me 30 bucks for it!
than they resell it for 80!
big enough mark up for you, you greedy selfish SOBs?

Man, you have many gripes with the industry Nick. I crack up early in your piece: “too many great developers and publishers have sold their soul to the devil!: lol

its just frustrating seeing the industry i love so much go downhill!
i really hate these selfish publishers who are in it for the money, not for the desire to push the industry forward and show us what is possible.
there a splinter in the industries finger, slowly getting infected and holding us back!
