PlayStation, the brand has been around for over 15 years. From PSone to PS3, gamers the world over have taken the ride with Sony and have been enjoying it, thus far. Although there were gaming companies who helped shape the medium as art way before Sony came on the scene, it wasn’t until PSone came along that gaming as an artform started spreading its wings into the mainstream.
Things got even better with PS2, over 150 million units sold worldwide and counting, with the ailing console still holding on to dear life as it outlives any other console ever constructed.
Now the PS3 is out and doing mighty good. In fact just today we learned that the console is now winning Sony profits after four long years. It’s a total entertainment hub, really, and according to Sony’s senior director of PlayStation Network at SCEA, Susan Panico, the hardware giant “legitimized” gaming as a form of entertainment.
She said this while speaking to Gamasutra in a recent interview:
“I think what’s important is that gaming is the heart and soul of the company, and it’s what we do really well,” she said. “But what we’ve learned over the years… What we did as PlayStation, if you go back 15 years ago, we legitimized [gaming] as a form of entertainment.”
“It’s not a hobby; it’s a broader form of entertainment. But what we’ve learned over the past 15 years is that we have to provide other forms of entertainment to the consumer: movies, comics, music, what have you.”
And I’d have to agree with the woman; Sony has played a major role in getting the industry to where it is today. We respect that.
