Rockstar Took Five Years To Develop Red Dead Redemption

by Ernice Gilbert on May 21st, 2010, under News, Rockstar

Good things don’t usually come easy unless you’re Paris Hilton, like wise good things come to those who wait, and work hard, with enduring patience, to see their effort not only come to fruition, but also stand out amongst the crowd.

That’s Rockstar’s goal apparently. It took the studio 5 long years to develop Red Dead Redemption.

“It is more work than I can actually describe,” one of the game’s dev, Lazlow replied when ask by the BBC News Beat how much time and work is involved in making one of your games.

“The studios work very hard for many years on the code and the graphics.”

He continued: “On RDR they’ve done about five years’ work. It takes a long time to make a video game from the first idea to inception, to design the motion capture, to writing all the scripts. Each of our open world games has up to 1000 characters walking around and you need to make personalities, names and pages of dialogue for all those people.”

Same thing I’ve been saying all along: if you want a great game, then time and effort must be placed into making said game great. Who cares what Pachter says, Rockstar are visionaries.

well, lets hope the games worth the wait!
5 years is kinda pathetic though, i mean look at games like uncharted 2, assassins creed 2 they only took 2 years to make and are just as good and chock full of content than RDR.

even alan wake, or heavy rain, or GOW3.
while i love those games (except GOW3 that was a MASSIVE! disappointment) there is nothing in there that makes it look like a 5 year title.

obviously if you want to make a good game you need to spend lots of time on it but for peeks sake 5 years is just pushing it!
i can only hold my interest for so long!
    perfect example, GT5.
i was dying for that game im a MASSIVE! GT fan, i was hanging on limb salving at the mouth for every little detail.
now, i could not care less if it releases or not!
sorry, but i can only hold excitement for something for so long before i get bored and move that excitement to something thats actually close to release.

I agree with you on many points Nick. Welcome Back!!!! I thought God of War 3 was great, especially the opening.

But about GT5, you’ve hit the nail on the head there dude. What the hec is Sony PD thinking? That’s just way too long to be waiting on a game if you ask me.

huh, thanks i just got back from a much needed holiday!

GOW3 disappointed me because it felt so different from the first 2 games, it strayed so far away from the platforming puzzle side and went for all out gore and ripping everything apart.
i think they over did the rage thing just a little, even for kratos!

as for PD, kaz is a perfectionist hes never happy with anything, GT5 could be pure gold and he still would not be happy with it!
he just needs to check his ego, and say ok this good enough and release it.
as long as its not a mess or something, which im sure its not just release it!
obviously if its not finished, or needs work than by all means take your time, but if there just procrastinating on small things there wasting there time.
i have absolutely no doubt GT5 will be THE driving simulator just like its predecessors have been, but for it to do that it actually has to be released!!!

i wish cory barlog would go back to SM to lead GOW4, i dont think stig is the right person to be directing the series.
he just changed the game so much it really felt almost like a different series.
will be interesting to see where ghost of sparta takes off, hopefully they put a little more time into the story though CoO confused me so much i had no idea what the hell was happening!!!

Yeah, the end of God of War III was totally annoying though, I mean what the hec was going on there? You went to hell and then got redeemed and go back to earth…..oops sorry for the spoilers guys…. I’ll shut up now.
