Square-Enix Lays Off 400 Staff Members Even As Franchises Show Strong Performance

Square-Enix must be pleased with the sales numbers of its flagship franchise, Final Fantasy and today the company announced that it has sold over 5 million copies of the latest installment, FFXIII.

But that’s not all, the company had many reasons to celebrate as performance was strong not only with Final Fantasy, but other franchises as well.

Eidos Interactive Batman: Arkham Asylum has sold 3.24 million units worldwide, and Just Cause has already sold 1.19 million units in the short time it’s been out. All this proves that the Eidos acquisition was indeed a smart move by SE.

The single biggest performer however, was Dragon Quest IX, selling a massive 4.26 million units in Japan alone. That’s just amazing. Said title will be released in Europe later this year, summertime to be exact.

Despite all the success, things were not all positive for the company, as it was forced to lay off over 400 staff members this year with more to come.

Still, Square-Enix plans to “strengthen own IPs” the likes of Tomb Raider and Hitman.
