David Jaffe and his gang at Eat Sleep And Play are cooking up something serious. It’s a game of course, one we have no idea what it really is. Is it an RPG? “no” Jaffe said while speaking to Geoff Keighley on Bonus Round, it is however, “action” packed.
“I think every great game, whether it’s the story or not have to affect the gamer emotionally,” he told Keighley when asked about the importance of games affecting players emotionally and whether a videogame should be able to make players cry.
“Right after God of War, I was in a period where I said, I don’t know what else I can do on the story front, but I do know games are great at competition, and energy and comradery and sought of that kind of emotion that I wanted to try to work with our team and get players to express and to feel.
Since then when I think about story games, and I do want to go back and make some story games in my career beyond what I’ve done [but] I’m only interested in trying it even if it will never work – It may just be [that] I don’t know if it’s possible but I don’t think I want to do another story game if I can’t attempt to elicit fresh emotions,” he continued.
“One of the reasons I believe Flower is my favorite game of the year, you know people say what about Uncharted 2? What about Modern Warfare 2? And I’m like those games were brilliant – they were some of my favorite games of the year, but what I always say is those games press buttons incredibly well but have already been pressed in me many, many many times.
Flower was one of the first games to press different buttons and that turned on a light bulb in me and I said, games can elicit different kind of emotions than what we’re used to and how can you take what Flower is doing in terms of pressing those buttons, and potentially apply that to more of a narrative driven game.”
He added: “I’m definitely interested, it’s not what we’re doing right now, we’re still doing sought of straight up action at the moment but down the road absolutely.”
The man knows what he’s talking about I reckon, making some extremely viable points about the role of story in games. Talking about games, we now know a little bit more about what he and his team are working on: action.
Now who’d ever refuse that?

huh, david sounds so much like david its not funny.
oops, let me be more specific david jaffe sounds so much like david cage its not funny.
as they say great minds do think alike!
so i guess his next game wont be twisted metal?
kinda disappointed i really love TM and am dying for a new one, but at the same time im intrigued to see what hes going to give us.
will it be heavily story driven like heavy rain?
will it be emotional and innovative giving us a new genre like heavy rain?
guess E3 will reveal all!
E3 will be a momentous event this time around I suspect.
sony better announce a new syphon filter game, and another twisted metal otherwise im going to be front stage center with flaming pitchfork!!!!!
syphon filter is the companies most famous series, its sonys halo, its sonys mario, i can not believe they did not release it on the ps2 besides the psp ports, and more astonishing no ps3 titles.
its time for syphon filter to come back and blow our minds!
same goes for twisted metal!
Give me Syphon Filter and I’m set. Like you said Nick, I still can’t believe we’re in the PS3’s fourth year and yet, no Syphon Filter…
E3 might the its big day….
Might.
“I think every great game, whether it’s the story or not have to affect the gamer emotionally,” I couldn’t agree more. I’m definitely excited to hear any news about what he’s got planned. I would love a new Twisted Metal too and I think E3 could be the place to reveal it, especially this year. And man, I need to buy Flower.
Yeah, I need to buy flower too. I’ve heard so much about it.
if syphon filter is not announced at E3 than im sorry but i cant be held for my actions!
though im 100% positive it will be since the developers who did the last 2 were sony bend and the last game they made was resistance retribution they have no announced game since that.
so what have they been working on since then?
a little birdy tells me none other than syphon filter!
