Ever since Capcom brought to light what they had to begrudgingly do to fit Lost Planet 2 on the Xbox 360, there have been calls around the industry for Microsoft to increase the capacity of its games media, since every year developers want to push the envelope. You can’t do that with minimal space, especially when the competition’s console can house much more content.
Well speaking to CVG today, MS Stephen McGill, Director of Xbox and Entertainment said the software giant had “no plans†of joining the Blu-ray train.
“We have no plans to adopt [a] Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox 360. In fact, the future of home entertainment started last autumn when Xbox 360 became the first and only console to offer instant-on 1080p streaming HD movies.”
Over the weekend, MS CEO Steve Ballmer hinted at new models and designs are a possibility and so many thought part of that would be Blu-ray drive integration. Not so says McGill.
So do you think the Xbox 360 needs a Blu-ray disc drive? Share your thoughts.

Well it would be a plus for future 360 owners…but not current 360 owners. Microsoft can’t come out and say oops we should have included Blu-ray or say it would’ve been better if we went with Blu-ray from the start. The truth is they can’t build future 360′s with a Blu-ray drive for games because they’ll leave out there current install base. If it’s a add on it’s going to make a lot of people mad that they have to purchase another thing for there xbox. Then there’s the problem of some people not wanting to upgrade and being mad they can’t play a certain game because it’s on a Blu-ray disc. They can dodge the question and say they don’t need it and give a million reasons why they don’t need it but it doesn’t matter because it will be a dumb move if they did decide to put a Blu-ray drive in future consoles for games… If it’s strictly for movies then I don’t see it being an issue at all.
