In Square-Enix’s World, Final Fantasy XIII Is Not A JRPG

The mastermind behind almost everything Final Fantasy has said he doesn’t view his title as a JRPG (Japanese Role Playing Game), instead he said the game “straddles genre.

I’m not too sure where he’s going with this because in my mind, Final Fantasy games are what defined JRPGs, almost always different in styles compared to western work such as Fallout, Mass Effect and Oblivion.

“There’s a trend these days to strictly categorize games as western RPGs or Japanese RPGs, but Final Fantasy is something that we don’t try to categorize as either/or,” he reasoned with Edge.

“For us the game straddles genre,” he added.

And for us, they’re the epitome of what JRPGs are Mr. Kitase, and by the way, we love them.
